Musical essay – variation on Ferdydurke” op.28 (2023)

One day I dreamed that I was writing a Polish essay. Ah, those horror stories from school!!! How often they return! It was an exam, maybe a high school leaving exam. I don’t know exactly, but the topic was about “Ferdydurke” by Gombrowicz. I wrote something and wrote something, and the words created… sounds! Both Józio and Pimko were musicians. Everything sounded. I patiently fought with form, I faced with style! And somewhere at the end of the room, a strict committee with a huge metronome was impatiently waiting for my musical essay…

Of course, after waking up, I had to write down this musical dream. I thought for a moment, then “sat down wisely” and wrote “Musical essay – variation on Ferdydurke” op.28. I chose this form because both in the variation and in the essay you have to write about the topic. There is humor and grotesque, seriousness and sadness in this piece. Here you can find unusual chords alongside traditional harmony, special effects and the simplicity of the melodic line. Each variation constitutes a paragraph of an essay and develops the theme in various forms and musical styles. Don’t be surprised at anything, because in the dreamlike “Musical Essay” everything is possible.

As soon as I find myself in this dream again, I will ask the honorable committee whether I passed this exam, and in the meantime, I invite you to read my “Essay”. The metronome is already starting to beat the tempo of the song…
